Geography of the Panchayat

Topography

Mokeri Grama Panchayat is characterized by hills and valleys. Based on its physical features, the Panchayat can be divided into five regions: highland areas, sloping areas, plains, low-lying areas, and paddy field regions.

Highland Areas

The hilly regions located at East Valliyayi, Valliyayi, and Vallangad along the north-eastern boundary of the Panchayat, as well as the Koorara hill in the western part, are approximately 70 meters above sea level. These areas consist mainly of laterite formations and loose soil, resulting in limited water availability.

Sloping Areas

The major crops cultivated in these regions are cashew and coconut.

Plains

The plain region extends from Valliyayi to Koorara and includes places such as Makoolpeedika, Vallangad, Kadepram, and Aattupuram. The main crops cultivated here are coconut, arecanut, mango, jackfruit, cashew, banana, and tapioca.

Low-Lying Areas

The low-lying regions include Mokeri paddy fields, Koorara paddy fields, Nallali Thazhe Vayal, Valliyayi paddy fields, Kadepram paddy fields, and Pathippalam Srambi paddy fields.

Paddy Field Areas

The major paddy cultivation areas include Mokeri paddy fields, Koorara paddy fields, Nallali Thazhe Vayal, Valliyayi paddy fields, Punchappalam paddy fields, Kadepram paddy fields, Mulayil paddy fields, and East Valliyayi. Paddy is the principal crop cultivated in these regions, while pulses and vegetables are grown as intercrops.

The region is predominantly covered with fertile laterite soil. Clay-mixed soil is also found in certain areas.

A river flowing from the Kannavam Reserve Forest in the east enters Mokeri near the East Valliyayi wooden bridge. The Elathodu stream, originating from Valliyayi hill, joins this river at East Valliyayi. At a place called Chirammal, the river splits into two branches: one flows through Urav Kunnu and the other through Velanchira, later joining the river flowing from Muthiyanga near Chirakkalkavu before reaching Pathippalam.

A stream originating from Kanniyaridam in the valley below Ezhunnallakunnu joins the river at Kanjirakkadavu below Pathippalam. Another stream originating from Vannathikulam on the south-eastern border of Mokeri flows along the southern boundary and merges with Chadalapuzha.
